Malaysia to host the 6th World Islamic Economic Forum

On March 11, 2010: The 6th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) will return to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, following previously successful Forums held in Kuwait and Jakarta. It will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on 18-20 May 2010.

Bearing the theme ‘Gearing for Economic Resurgence’, the 6th WIEF will be officially opened by the Hon. Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia and Patron of the WIEF Foundation. It is expected to bring together some 2000 participants comprising world leaders and members of the global business community to attend the Forum to discuss ideas and strategies on global issues affecting trade and business and to network with each other on cross border business opportunities.

The Chairman of the WIEF Foundation, the Hon. Tun Musa Hitam noted that the event has grown in influence and prestige over the years since the inaugural Forum held in Kuala Lumpur in 2005. He stressed that the Forum has been instrumental in providing a platform for thought-provoking dialogue to provide synergistic solutions to key economic issues of interest to the Muslim World and to bridge the economic gap between the Muslim and non-Muslim World.

“From a humble start of just 600 participants during the Inaugural Forum, the WIEF has travelled far over the last 5 years, growing in acceptance throughout every region, thanks to the stellar support of its partners and participants. This year, we welcome the Forum back to Kuala Lumpur in a bid to tackle the current state of the global economy, from a Muslim world perspective,” said the Hon. Tun Musa Hitam.

118 Speakers have confirmed their attendance. These include 9 Heads of State/Government namely, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Sultan of Brunei, the President of Indonesia, Senegal, Syria and Maldives, and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Kazakhstan and Bangladesh. Other prominent Speakers include former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Malaysia and the Netherlands, former President of Mauritius as well as Ministers, captains of industry, academic scholars, regional experts, and Heads of Regional and International Institutions.

Forum highlights include the Leadership Panel to discuss leadership challenges in the new era, the Global CEO Panel, a Special Leaders Dialogue on Climate Change, a signature ‘Countries in Focus’ Session showcasing investment opportunities in selected developing OIC countries and 8 Parallel Sessions on tourism, logistics, SMEs, water management,branding, technology for education, entrepreneurship and business ethics, innovation and Islamic Banking.

The 6th WIEF will be preceded by the Businesswomen Forum, the Young Leaders Forum and the 6th WIEF Exhibition on 18 May 2010 to be opened by the Hon. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia. A special highlight of the Young Leaders Forum is a creative arts exhibition called ‘The Marketplace of Creative Arts’ showcasing unique artistic innovations in the Muslim World.
