Preamble

The purpose of this paper is to update, and build on, Ian Buchanan’s Paper, “Realising Economic Possibilities in the Emerging Islamic Markets”, which was presented at the first World Islamic Economic Forum in Kuala Lumpur in 2005. This paper focused on sharing lessons gained in over 30 years working with business and government leaders throughout the Asia Pacific region – including OIC member nations and observers – during periods of both unprecedented economic growth, and crisis.

Biography
Ian is currently Senior Adviser to – and former Regional Chairman of - Booz Allen Hamilton Australia, NZ, SE Asia. Ian has over 30 years experience throughout the region and is former SE Asia/S Pacific CEO of US ‘Think Tank’ SRI International.
Ian has a scientific and business background plus 5 years flying with the RAF Reserves, where he remains a member of the RAF ‘Ten Ton’ Club. He has worked extensively at the most senior levels of both the public, private and defence sectors advising on strategy, performance improvement and change management
Ian has an MBA from Wharton, an M.A. in Chemistry/Quantum Chemistry from Magdalen College, Oxford; and advanced studies in economic development at the Kiel Institute of World Economics, FRG and in leadership at the Aspen Institute
Ian is Chairman of AGSM’s Centre for Corporate Change; a Director of Australia’s leading national security and intelligence systems supplier, The Distillery; The Great Barrier Reef Research Foundation; Ian is also a member of the International Advisory Panel of IAG and the Advisory Councils of NICTA; AGSM; leading law firm, Malleson’s; Indonesia’s Executive Centre for Global Leadership; the Asian Strategy & Leadership Institute and The World Islamic Economic Forum
Ian is a former Director/Adviser to Singapore’s National Computer Board, (KLSE Listed) Malaysia’s Southern Bank , (ASX listed) Computer Power Group and was the only non-Asian member of the GE (SE Asian & Indochina) Advisory Board
Ian has been a regular guest lecturer on Asian Strategy at Harvard and other Business Schools, has authored a number of scientific and business papers and has contributed to several books on the region.
